Well, the year isn’t quite over and to be honest I’m not wholly sure it will ever end, so here’s a quick little list of my favourite reads so far for 2020!
Top 2020 (so far) Reads:
Fangs, by Sarah Anderson
Summary: Elsie the vampire is three hundred years old, but in all that time, she has never met her match. This all changes one night in a bar when she meets Jimmy, a charming werewolf with a wry sense of humor and a fondness for running wild during the full moon. Together they enjoy horror films and scary novels, shady strolls, fine dining (though never with garlic), and a genuine fondness for each other’s unusual habits, macabre lifestyles, and monstrous appetites.
Quick Review: A beautifully done dark little love story, this graphic novel details the everyday life of a not-so-ordinary paranormal couple that I honestly can’t get enough of. High and lows, darkness and light, this book is sweet and wholesome and deadly in all the best ways.
Recommended For: This one is perfect for a crisp and spooky autumn evening, cozied up with a tea and burning candles!

I’m Thinking of Ending Things, by Iain Reid
Summary: A man and his girlfriend are on their way to a secluded farm. When the two take an unexpected detour, she is left stranded in a deserted high school, wondering if there is any escape at all. What follows is a twisted unraveling that will haunt you long after the last page is turned.
Quick Review: A debut by a Canadian author, I went outside my typical fiction preferences to give this a try in the spring. Well, it’s done its job (maybe too well?) because eight months later and I’m still too scared to finish this horror story!
Recommended for: A winter read in the dark hours of the evening, gazing out at the falling snow and bitter winds.

Get a Life, Chloe Brown, by Talia Hibbert
Summary: A witty, hilarious romantic comedy about a woman who’s tired of being “boring” and recruits her mysterious, sexy neighbor to help her experience new things.
Quick Review: Another book out of my typical genre, I read this contemporary romance after hearing this recommended from just about everyone, and I have zero regrets about it! Hibbert crafts a beautiful and diverse love story that was heart-felt and engaging from start to finish. Lucky for us all, there are two more books follow the leads two sisters and I have a sneaking suspicion they’ll both be on my favs of 2021!
Recommended For: A classic summer read, on the beach or otherwise!
The Martian, by Andy Weir
Summary: Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he’s sure he’ll be the first person to die there.
Quick Review: A contemporary science fiction by a debut author (admittedly, I’m late to this one!), this was a hilarious novel that I’ve officially and lovingly added to my collection. I put it off for some time due to the technical aspects and mathematics everyone brings up when speaking about this one, but somehow Weir was able to make this engaging and exciting for even the layperson like myself. When a need a laugh and a thrill and to feel like I have a handle on the scientific things of the world and beyond (which, I very much do not), this one is my go-to!
Recommended For: A great springtime read that embodies the perseverance and hope of the season.
